Melissa’s Story

Hi, my name is Melissa.

My mom had stage 4 breast cancer at 45, and I found out when I was 15. When I turned 20, I got tested for the BRCA gene, and it turned out I'm positive for BRCA2. This changed my life. With my doctors' help and regular tests, I took steps to prevent getting cancer and became a previvor without a positive diagnosis.

On August 15, 2023, I decided to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. I had my first reconstruction surgery on November 28, 2023, and another one is scheduled for February 5. Unfortunately, I lost my grandmother, mom, and paternal aunt to breast cancer, which has had a huge impact on my life. My biggest supporters are no longer with me due to this disease.

After talking to a genetic counselor, I've also decided to have my ovaries removed once I heal from the double mastectomy surgery. Dealing with this and losing loved ones has made me more proactive and aware of my health. I want to stay ahead of this disease.

-Melissa
