Brenda’s Story

Hi, my name is Brenda,

I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma and Paget's disease of the breast at the age of 29. As a mother of four precious girls, I have always made myself a priority to care for my well-being. I started to notice changes during pregnancy four years ago. Once I notified my doctor of bloody discharge as well as redness to the nipple, he encouraged us to get an MRI done once I delivered, as I was seven months pregnant. We did do an MRI, and I got the results over the phone that everything came back clear.

I proceeded to continue my mom life. Before I knew it, my symptoms were becoming unbearable, heaviness, and redness on my breast. I made an appointment to request to be seen by a specialist. Before I knew it, I had an oncologist and a surgeon helping me determine the cause of my breast changes. We were able to conclude it was Paget's of the breast and Ductal Carcinoma by an incisional biopsy. I got informed about treatment routes and chose to do a complete unilateral mastectomy. I am currently recovering from that surgery I had. And I am starting treatment for five years to block the hormones to avoid spreading and reduce recurrence as well as having more surgeries coming up for breast reconstruction.

It's been a journey, but I know my story will bring awareness to young breast cancer patients! My daughters are watching Mama take the biggest battle yet in life, and I want them to know there is hope and faith!

-Brenda
