Stephanie’s Story
I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at 33. Genetic testing also revealed I carry the BRCA1 gene. The news was completely unexpected, upsetting, and shocking.
I found the lump on my own but was dismissed twice by doctors because of my young age. Thankfully, a month later, I was able to get a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy, which confirmed my diagnosis. I received the call from the nurse while I was at the office that day. The very next day, I met with my medical team, and it was a whirlwind of information.
The following week, I had my port placed and started an intensive chemotherapy treatment plan. I underwent a bilateral mastectomy on Oct. 1—the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. How ironic!
I’m so grateful for the incredible support system that has been by my side throughout this journey; I couldn’t have done it without them. Unfortunately, treatment will take longer than initially expected. I still need more chemotherapy, another surgery, radiation, and oral medications for the next year to a year and a half.
I’m doing my best to stay strong!
